The ultrastructure of calcareous cirratulid (Polychaeta, Annelida) tubes
نویسنده
چکیده
The entire tube wall of Dodecaceria caulleryi and D. coralii is composed of thin calcareous lamellae with a spherulitic prismatic ultrastructure. In Diplochaetetes mexicanus the tube ultrastructure is similar, but contains also some lamellae with a homogeneous structure. The biomineralization system of cirratulids has not evolved since the appearance of calcareous tubes in the Oligocene. The tube ultrastructure of cirratulids shows the strongest similarity to that of sabellids.

Observations of the feeding behavior of Cirriformia filigera (Delle Chiaje, 1825) (Annelida: Polychaeta) from the intertidal zone of São Francisco and Engenho D'água beaches (São Sebastião, State of São Paulo) were made in the laboratory. This species, like other cirratulids, is a deposit feeder, feeding mainly on sediment surface with the aid of its grooved and ciliated palps, which are used t...
متن کاملOccurrence, Formation and Function of Organic Sheets in the Mineral Tube Structures of Serpulidae (Polychaeta, Annelida)
A scanning electron microscopy study of organic sheets in serpulid tube mineral structures was carried out to discern their function, formation and evolution. The organic sheets may have some taxonomic value in distinguishing the two major clades of serpulids previously identified. The organic sheets in the mineral tube structure occur only in certain taxa belonging to clade A, but not all spec...
متن کاملTube ultrastructure of Pomatoceros americanus (Polychaeta, Serpulidae): implications for the tube formation of serpulids
The inner tube layer of Pomatoceros americanus has a complex oriented ultrastructure, which cannot be explained by the standard granular secretion model, predicting a largely unoriented structure of the tube. In the lamello-fibrillar structure of the inner tube layer, the crystallization axis of crystals has a uniform orientation, which is not continuous through successive growth increments. Th...
